How Long Have You Had That?

Hey Divas! Wondering what the shelf life is for all of that makeup in your junk drawer? We all know that you have a pile of makeup in your junk drawer that you will get to "one day". In other words - you will never use it, maybe because you don't know how or the makeup consultant "forced" you into buying it and you're too embarrassed to return it.

In case you didn't know, beauty products do have a shelf life, however, chances are the makeup you were compelled to buy years ago has long expired, Honey. Here's a quick guide on the shelf lives of typical beauty products, listed in alphabetical order [something like that]. Please keep in mind that these are estimates, no matter what your know-it-all girlfriend will tell you, it's unlikely you'll go blind from using that 2 year old mascara.

Brushes - Wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent or Tea Tree Shampoo.
(Sponges Wash weekly and discard monthly.)

Concealer - Up to 12 months.

Cream & gel cleansers - 1 year.

Eyeshadow - Will last up to 3 years. Tip From Kisses: A dark eyeshadow can be used as eyeliner [or a brow filler]. I swear by it. All you need is a super-flat eyeliner brush for this: Get the brush a little damp and dab in dark eyeshadow (black, brown or deep jewel-tones work great). Wiggle the brush into your lash line focusing on the space between your lashes, then sweep the color just above your lash line. For the brows, grab an angled definer brush, brown eyeshadow and start filling.

Pencil Eye Liner - Should be sharpened after each use. It can last up to 3 years.

Lip Liner - Up to 3 years. Tip From Kisses: Skip the push-up lip liners. They're expensive, tend to break and you never really know how much you have left until you run out – which really sucks, especially when you’re putting it on in the car on your way to a date. Oh, that’s never happened to you before? Either way, there’s no need to spend money on push-up lip liners, stick with the pencil.

Foundation - ABC[YI] - Always Be Checking Your Ingredients. Yes, I made that up. Anyway, a water-based foundation will last up to 12 months, oil-based will last up to 18 months. You may find you need two different shades of foundation each year: One for summer when your skin is naturally darker and one for winter when you're lighter. Tip From Kisses: If your water-based foundation dries out before it's expiration date, simply add a few drops of alcohol-free toner and shake it like a polaroid picture. No need to add anything to oil-based foundations since they contain oil - they will tend to separate. Just like my favorite jar of Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter - "oil separation is natural, just stir and refrigerate." UGH, I really hate when that happens but a nice shake and stir gets everything right back in place.

Powder - 2 years.

Lipstick - Some experts say 1-2 years. Others say up to 4 years. What everyone agrees on is that if it smells sour, just throw it out, it's spoiled. Tip From Kisses: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer – just like everything else.

Mascara - Using 2 year old mascara will cause blindness. Juuuust kidding. This product expires the fastest though. Throw it out after 4 months. Tip From From Kisses: Be easy on the pumping. There's really no point in doing that in the first place. Everything you need is on the wand as soon as you take it out. Pumping in and out causes the mascara to dry quicker and forces bateria into the wand. Swirl the brush as you pull it out. If it starts to get cakey, try dipping the tube in boiling water for about 15 seconds. It will make the makeup gooey again and may even kill some bacteria.

Nail Polish - Up to 12 months, depending on the quality and how many times you take it on a plane (we all know the cap always unscrews on a flight. Don't believe me? Try putting it in your purse they next time you fly. You'll have a purse full of a fumey mess!).

Rule of thumb, if it looks like this:

TOSS IT! Really, how long have I had this?

Okay, so I was doing a little seasonal cleaning. I found a container full of nail polish I hardly ever used. I decided to go through it after catching up on Monday night's episode of Gossip Girl.

The rule of thumb for everything during major cleaning – when in doubt...chile, just throw it out! Besides, there's always the "next best thing" out there ready for your purchase.

Until next time, happy tossing!

Halloween: Same Wings, Different Concept

I always have a hard time letting things rest...so I decided to wear my wings for the THIRD time for Halloween LOL. I mean, I never celebrated Halloween to begin with and buying something every year for just one day doesnt sit well with me. Anyway, I decided that I would be a Dark Fairy, meets the Black Swan. I don't recall the Black Swan having wings so I incorporated my theme from last year, the Dark Fairy.

This was my first attempt to create this look. I rarely get the chance to create a dramatic look. I tried to create a pale look, but not a completely flushed look like the image for the movie

Here I am with my wings and the other Dangerous Divas for the night.

Here I am mean-mugging. Hey, I had to play the part.

This was a lot of fun and I look forward to wearing my wings again next year LOL! Okay, maybe not.

Lip Service - Citrus Beauty

Want to spice up your look this season? Try the newest take on the coral lips.

Yes, coral. The fresh-faced cousin of red is the hot shade of lipstick for spring and summer. A coral and a pink lipstick is a must for your makeup bag and this year there are many shades of both colors to choose from. Corals come in a wide range of shades - you'll see orange, pink and peach shades of coral.

Stars like Rihanna and Solange have been seen sporting this latest trend with a twist of orange.

Regardless of your complexion, this color is sure to complement you.

I decided to pucker up and try Orange Soda by Colour U Cosmetics. You can find this in the Cumberland Mall.

MCK's Suggestions:
1. Orange Soda - Colour U Cosmetics
2. Revlon – Moon Drops Orange Flip
3. L´oreal – Glam Shine Cream 202
4. YSL – Sheer Gloss Stick Tangy Orange
5. M.A.C. – Morange
6. Revlon - Coral Reef 170

Which shade of coral will you rock this season?

Date Ready Makeup

So you have a date tonight. Your outfit is together, you're smelling good, you have your face set, but you don’t know what to do to complete the look. A bright pink lip and smokey eye may be super haute amongst your girlfriends, but sitting across the table from your cutie at your favorite restaurant? Eh, not so much.

Most men aren’t huge fans of makeup anyway. Many find it distracting. Some think it's deceptive. Either way, wearing makeup is a must for a doll.

Keep it simple. Besides, you don’t want to scare him away the next morning when your makeup is all over his pillow. Uh, yeah, anyway, highlight one feature at a time.

I’m not a relationship expert, but I hear from my guy friends that the most alluring parts of a woman’s face are her eyes and lips. Bring out your eyes out with flattering lashes or Rimmel Glam Eyes Lash Flirt.

Pucker up with some Velvet Touch #122 Nougat creamy lipstick from Gosh.

One splash of your favorite perfume and out the door you go! It's the weekend baby and it's time to play! Got a hot date? I do! Hehe.

Swapnista With A Sista!

Looking for something to do on this beautiful weekend? Check out "The Prettiest Day Party To Hit Atlanta" for Swapnista presented by Pretty Girls Rock Dresses and Fashion Envy, LLC. Rock back and forth to the live DJ, mingle, swap clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer need or wear.

I guess it's time for a little Spring Cleaning. I always have a feeling that I can repeat a style. Like, you know those burgundy shiny shoes with the thick sole I used to wear in the 8th grade? Ooh or those hunter green Gauchos. Okay, I can definitely keep those.

Do you still have that dress in your closet that you know you wont wear again? Swap it out. Do you have a cute purse that you can't seem to find anything to wear with? Swap it out. This isnt your grandmother's average swap meet. The event will feature a fashion show, mixing and mingling with industry experts and refreshments.

Check out the flyer below for details.

Cute Sundress. Check. Mani and Pedi. Check. Light makeup and lips poppin'. Check. Now thats how a Pretty Girl rocks a dress!

MCK Hits The Road!

Road Triiiip!!

MCK and Girl About Town, both resident members of the MyMeApparel Faces of Me! Team, hit the road to Columbia, South Carolina for the 4th Annual “Uber Hawt” Style Exhibition. MyMeApparel founder, Valerie Reaves prepared for a long weekend, along with a few from the Faces of Me! Team: Model, Brittani Nolan; Wardobe Stylist and Owner of Girl About Town, Kyla Robinson; Owner of Hair 2 Please, Onecia Maloney; and Owner of Tightworks Braids & MUA, Marie “China” Auguste.

Here is a pic of the MyMeApparel Glam Squad:

The show was a success! While backstage I could hear the voice of 3Jay Productions visionary, Jalia “Lia” Pettis share with the crowd about her victory in the 4th Annual Style Exhibition and how she almost gave up. She acknowledged her faith and moved on with the show. Her heartwarming speech moved me while I did some touchups on the models backstage, so I can imagine how she moved the crowd.

I met some great people, but I didn’t take many pics. :( It’s always hard to find time to whip out my camera while Im embracing the moment. Here are a couple of pics before leaving the suites.
Girl About Town jazzed up a tee by tucking it in a pair of leggings.

Girl About Town tied a knot of the side of my tee and stretched out the neck for the off-the-shoulder look.

Backstage: The kaos.

Model: Kendra Samuel wearing a MMA piece for the Spring.

I absolutely love fashion shows. I enjoy watching a designer's vision come to life. I dont strut my stuff on the runway, I create the face for it.

In A Rush? Apply Mascara, Gloss & Blush!

This one is dedicated to all of my divas-on-the-go. Like you, I find myself rushing to get out of the house for work [or the gym] and I only have 5 minutes left to apply makeup, grab my keys and head out of the door. For a quick glam look, apply mascara, gloss and blush to your face. My favorite mascara is Maybelline's Colossal Volum' Express Mascara

What you'll love about:
• Lush collagen-enriched plumping formula and Mega Brush instantly build 9X volume, without clumps!
• Contact lens safe and ophthalmologist-tested!
• The brush is washable!
For Best Results: Sweep brush from root to tip to plump lashes and achieve dramatic volume. Do not let dry between coats. Removes easily with soap and water.

The gloss I cant live without: Co Bigelow Ultra Mentha Lip Shine.
I discovered this tasty gloss while waiting in line at Bath & Body Works years ago. This gloss lasts for hours without re-applying. Most of all, it smells and tastes great! Its super infused with Co Bigelow's clasic Mentha that refreshes your breath with a tingling sensation.

For my Blushing Beauties, try MAC Hushabye. Im not sure if they sell it anymore (im sure you can find it on ebay), but I love it. This is the perfect raspberry blush. Its sheer, natural and has lasting power. I wear it evryday.

So there you have it, Dolls: makeup in 5 minutes. Dont get caught putting makeup on in the car. I think its great because of the natural light, but officers and bad timing are against me. Putting makeup on in the car can be dangerous. Save yourself a ticket and a fender bender.

Let's Shoot!

Ok so you have an outfit in your wardrobe that you have just never had the opportunity to wear, perhaps you simply want some funky photographs of yourself to look back on in the future or maybe you are a model trying to build your portfolio?

Well, let's have a photo shoot!

These shoots are on location in unusual places and take a whole day but are huge amounts of fun. The first thing I do is give you a makeover with funky, dramatic makeup and hair (this can be more subtle if you don't want to go crazy) and then it's off to find locations and shoot the day away.

Guys you too, of course, are welcome. ;)

Here’s my first photo shoot with Kyla Robinson, founder of Girl About Town, Photographer Kwes, and models Terrell Wright and Tarsha McDaniel.

First stop: Cabbagetown. Its known for its guerilla artworks.

Here's Kwes setting his camera up for the kill.

And this is what he produced. Love it! Oh, yeah, kudos to the Makeup Artist ;)

These two were made for this. I loved the energy!

Here’s Kyla getting ready for our next set on the graveyard.

Ok, so by the time we got to the graveyard, it was closed. This is the best we could do outside of the gate. Terrell did his twists and bends for this:

I absolutely love working on the set of a photo shoot. This is where I can bring creativity to the set, experiment with colors and of course have fun!

The Daniel Fast

I started this fast at the top of the year and I've decided to continue with it [somewhat] as a lifestyle change. I've lost weight, my skin has changed, Im more energetic than ever in my life, more active an some have asked "How did you do it?". Well for starters, I stopped eating chicken [and turkey] a little over a year ago and I feel great. I have my opinions about chicken and how they are raised in unhealthy conditions, not only that, but I'm on this journey to "Eat Right For Your Bloodtype" by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo. My entire family has incorporated this regimen into their lifestyles. Anyway, back to the Daniel Fast. I spoke to a close friend last night and she asked me to do it with her. I obliged. Besides, I didnt like what I saw on the scale on Monday and I've picked up a few bad habits again.

The purpose of a fast is to align your flesh with your inner spirit. Your soul is greatly impacted during the Daniel Fast; it is the seat of our emotions, intellect, personality and will. This is where we experience cravings, frustration, anger . . . and even happiness. During the Daniel Fast, your soul may very well rebel against the dramatic change in your diet. Experiencing and winning this battle over the flesh is often one of the most powerful lessons of the Daniel Fast. Put your Spirit in charge of the fast. I know you may feel like giving up, taking a “bite” of some chocolate [my downfall], or drink some “herbal” tea, vitamin water, or Riesling. You must challenge your Flesh with your Spirit in this battle and have Integrity with yourself. Let your Spirit win. Speak an affirmation out loud – “I am whole and complete”, “I am a winner”, “I am fearlessly and wonderfully made”. When your flesh is acting out with a craving, take control of it with your Spirit (just as a parent takes control of a rebellious child). Ha!

Our bodies are clearly affected as our diet is changed, for some in very dramatic ways, during the Daniel Fast. Most people lose weight during the Daniel Fast [and i lost 12lbs!]. Many report healings from diabetes, allergies, arthritis and cancer. I strongly suggest that during the fast an herbal cleanse is used to achieve maximum results in weigh-loss, especially if this is your goal. You can purchase the 365 cleanse for $11.99 from Whole Foods (or Harry’s). Most cleanses in superstores are filled with chemicals, be sure to purchase a cleanse that has natural ingredients. READ THE LABEL.

During the detoxification from chemicals, sugars and impurities, you may experience headaches, leg cramps, fatigue and malaise. DO NOT BE ALARMED. You can always take Vitamins. Again, read the label to insure that the ingredients are whole and free from chemicals.

As you now know, fasting is not only used for weight-loss; it is always coupled with a spiritual goal. So during this time of fasting, you will want to focus on prayer, study and meditation. Take this time out to focus on the things you want for yourself and your life. Write them down, create a vision board, start a journal for this journey. Try reading an inspirational book [Dr. Wayne Dyer is one of my favorites :)]. Call, text or Ping someone close to you for encouragement.

Below is a list of foods that are allowed and a list of foods to avoid. Try your BEST to stick to this; you will love the results in the end. Resistance is key. Google recipes. My favorite site is: daniel-fast.com/recipes. There are plenty of recipes to choose from for Breafast, Lunch, Dinner and even snacks. Happy Fasting!

MyChoKolateKisses Speaks to D.I.V.A.S. are Diamonds

I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of remarkable young "divas". D.I.V.A.S [Developing Intelligent Volunteering Achieving Students] was founded by and educator, Monique Dewberry. I entered the platform to "God in Me" by Mary Mary. The girls sang along, I did my two-step across the room and spoke to the girls about love and self-image. Its always easy to look at someone in admiration, but one never knows what that individual has been through to get there.

I spoke about my struggles in college, failed relationships and friendships and the decisions that I made. I gave them insight on how I got to where I am now - by having a vision. I cannot stress enough about how important it is to create the world that you want to live in by simply SPEAKING it. Life and death lies in the power of the tongue, says Proverbs 18:21. I was pleased at how the young girls were receptive to my warm speech. I asked questions and they engaged in the conversation. At the end of the presentations, I had the chance to briefly get to know a few girls while I offered light makeup applications. This was a great experience and I was honored to be apart of it. If you would like to donate or know a young girl who needs a great mentor visit www.divas-are-diamonds.com

"Sweet Visions" - Write The Vision and Make it Plain

On the first day of the New Year, I had the pleasure of being authentic with some new and old friends. We let our hair down [I dont have much at all these days lol], drank some Mimosas and did some arts and craft. We created Vision Boards, something that I never took the time to do. I mean, I ve done a little scrapping here and there, but nothing serious. Ive written things down in a journal and they came to pass but I never took the time to put my thinking into action via paper, glue and scissors.

The purpose of a Vision Board is to simply make a collage of all the things that you want to do, have or be in life. It’s so easy to say it, but once you put these things in action, a new world opens up for your life. Proverbs 29:18 states, “Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps a vision is happy”. It is important that we align our vision at the beginning of a New Year so that we stay focused throughout the year.

We tapped into our deepest thoughts, dreams and desires. Once we started to share what we created for our boards, the atmosphere changed and God showed up. Where there are two or thre gathered, there He is in the midst of them. Oh, He was there! One friend spoke about her seperation from the church and I was amazed at how the girls chimed in and started to speak into her life. We all expressed out battles with weightloss, failed relationships, and lack of money management. The act of cutting out pictures and finding words that expressed how much we desired something different for the New Year brought peace into our lives. Faith was certainly activated my doing.

I look forward to creating more genuine friendships, having bountiful blessings in my personal business, and a romantic love life that I deserve. Ive had enough with having superficial friendships in my life, this "Sweet Visions" meeting showed me that its okay to open up in a safe place, trust and appreciate my girlfriends.
